A few years ago a lot of company tried their hands with personal digital assistants. Google turned google now into Google Assistant, Amazon created Alexa, Apple bought Siri and for Microsoft, it was Cortana, the fictional character from the game HALO where she is also a personal digital assistant.
Since then some more assistants have
Last year Microsoft and Amazon signed a deal which allowed these two assistants co-exist on both windows and Cortana. It was a big hint. Now
Speaking to journalists CEO Satya Nadella revealed that Microsoft no longer sees Cortana as a competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant. It sees Cortana as a skill. This is what Satya said.
“Cortana needs to be that skill for anybody who’s a Microsoft 365 subscriber. You should be able to use it on Google Assistant, you should be able to use it on Alexa, just like how you use our apps on Android and iOS so that’s at least how we want to think about where it’ll go.”
Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft is a big believer of cross-platform software support. The first product announcement of his after taking the CEO position was “Office for iPad”. His love for cross-platform is so much so that, he mad visual studio code to run on even Linux. Now that he sees Cortana as a service or skill that can be found in all digital assistants, it will be exciting how this plays out with Google and Google Assistance.
